Service Description
Situated in tranquil waters, the USAT Liberty takes front and center stage at Tulemben. The vessel is a cargo ship used as an army transport during the Second World War. On the 11th. June 1942, the USAT Liberty was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. When the vessel was taking on too much water, the ship was run aground on Tulemben beach. The earthquake that induced the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 caused the wreck to slip towards the ocean, a distance of 40 meters offshore in shallow waters, making it one of the most accessible wrecks in the world to suit divers of all skill levels. Over the years, the USAT Liberty has transformed from a barren wreck into a haven, teaming with life. The ship itself is covered in soft and hard corals, gorgonian fans, sponges, sea anemones, and crinoids, providing the perfect sanctuary for a diverse marine ecosystem. Turtles, napoleon wrasses and great barracudas are also common visitors to the wreck. On the way back to the shore, you can spot a group of garden eels poking out from the sandy seabed, swaying in the current. Seen particularly on night dives, the USAT liberty hosts a large school of bigeye trevally (or jackfish). Other reef fish like sweetlips, angelfish, batfish and surgeonfish also find refuge at night in the shipwreck. On a night dive, you might even catch a glance of a large morae eel actually come out of its lair. Dives at sunrise provide a chance to see the resident school of bump-head parrotfish that makes the wreck their sleeping quarters, queuing up at dawn to head out to sea. Although the USAT Liberty commands front and center at Tulemben, there are other sites to choose from, such as Kubu and Secret Garden to the North, Drop off and Coral Garden just South of the wreck and Emerald bay further to the South.
