Service Description

Nusa Penida is the largest of 3 islands just off the coast of Bali. The water here is relatively cold due to the deep ocean currents that reach Bali. But it is often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals and prolific fish. From July to mid-November, Mola-Mola, is usually when people dive these waters. Although they can be seen all year round, November to May is the best time to experience observing giant mantas drifting silently and gracefully over the cleaning station at Manta Point. The water, though dark, tends to be so clear here that they can even be seen from the cliff-tops above Manta Point. You may need to cling to the wall at 25-30m at Crystal Bay because the current may be challenging and unpredictable. However, during the new moon and full moon, especially at slack tide, between August to October is the best time to swim at a respectful distance with mola mola at this site. Due to the upwelling of deeper ocean currents, bringing with it nutrients, the mola mola come up here from deeper water. The mola mola is a relative of the puffer and trigger fishes. Much has been said about why these remarkable endangered creatures come so close to or even breach the surface of the water. The most plausible explanation is that they rise to the surface to warm their bodies and to divest themselves of the parasites that live on their skin. Mola mola and manta are not the only marine life found at Nusa Penida. Silver tip and grey reef sharks often swim in the currents around this remarkable little island barely 17 km long. Hawksbill turtle and a variety of puffer fish and lion fish are common. Giant moray eels live in holes and crevasses. Scorpionfish, bright anemone, nudibranches and even unicorn fish make the reefs their home. In sandy areas blue spotted stingrays marble rays and garden eels gather and can sometimes be seen in groups of three or four with heads facing each other.
